Actually, that's a very poetic comment (question) and I'm sure it's a compliment. I wouldn't mind having someone ask me that, provided I lived where you live. If someone asked me that down here (La Verne), there's a good chance the "fragrance of Chino" (i.e., dairy farms) might be in the air and it would be anything BUT a compliment. I think your students' use of the English language is muy interesante!
Yes, it was interesting. I'm just glad I can be fairly certain they don't know the phrase "breaking wind" and so I'm free from associated connotations. :-)
